Important Information About
Downloading Software

1. Software downloads presented on the J.D. Fox Micro website are only intended for individual home users and IT system administrators. If you are working on a business network, or otherwise currently using a computer you do not own, please see your IT systems manager or consult your company's Acceptable Use Policy for authorization before attempting to download and install software.

2. Many downloadable free software packages will install additional items, such as search engine toolbars for your web browser, that you did not intend to install. This can be very annoying. Generally, if you pay attention during the installation process, you can find the option to skip installing these add-ons if you don't want them. Look for and select the "Advanced" option during installation to ensure you have the most control over the installation process.

3. Many downloadable programs will also install processes that run in the background, so they can check online and then notify you if there are updates available to download. If you wish to disable these after installation, you should know that each program will require different procedures for you to accomplish this.

4. Many types of seemingly common downloads are not presented in the J.D. Fox Micro Resource Center. These include PC tuneups, registry cleaners, utilities that claim they will speed up your computer, cookie cleaners, pop-up blockers, and various toolbars and extensions for web browsers. Software of this type is usually garbage that may do more harm than good. Don't seek out these kinds of program, and don't ever click on a link in an unsolicited pop-up when you visit a web site, especially when the pop-up claims your computer is infected with a virus or that it has determined your computer is in need of a tune-up. Such attempts to scare you or appeal to a sense of urgency are major indicators that the software is even less likely to be legitimate or valuable.
